How to trim an image
- Open the image. Its uniform borders are trimmed at once and the box moves to the content.
- If too much or too little came off, move the Tolerance slider and press Trim edges again. Pad keeps a margin of a few pixels.
- Choose the border colour when the corners mislead it: white, black, transparent, or a colour you pick.
- Untick a side to leave it alone — for example keep the bottom when only the top bar should go.
- Press Crop Picture. PNG keeps transparency; JPG and WebP are offered too.
Where trimming saves the most time
Scanned pages arrive with a grey or white frame from the scanner lid. Screenshots carry empty space around a dialog. Frames grabbed from a video have black letterbox bars. Logos exported from design tools sit on a transparent canvas several times bigger than the mark. In every case the job is the same: find where the real content starts and stop there. Trim does that without guessing. It compares each edge row and column against the border colour and moves inward until something differs by more than the tolerance — so a faint shadow or a JPEG’s slightly noisy white still counts as border when you raise the slider, and a thin coloured rule stops the trim when you lower it.
Transparent margins on PNG and WebP are trimmed to the first visible pixel, and the result keeps its transparency. Nothing is uploaded; the measuring happens on the pixels in this tab.
After the trim
The box stays a normal crop box, so you can still lock a ratio, type exact pixels or straighten. To place a crop on the content’s subject rather than its edges, use auto crop, which trims first and then looks for faces and detail.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a border?
Edge rows and columns whose pixels all sit within the tolerance of the border colour. The colour is read from the corners by default, or you can set white, black, transparent or a picked colour.
Is it exact on large pictures?
Yes. A quick pass on the preview moves the box at once; a second pass at full resolution then sets each edge to the exact pixel.
Can I trim only one side?
Yes — every side has its own tick box. Untick the sides to keep and press Trim edges again.
How do I make it square after trimming?
Press “Make it square around the content”. The box grows to a centred square if the picture has room; if not, no crop pads it to a square instead.
Can I trim a whole folder?
Yes. Batch crop has a “Trim each picture’s borders” mode and reports the pixels removed from each side, per picture.
