How to fit a picture without cropping it
- Open the picture. It appears inside an Instagram portrait frame (1080 × 1350) with a blurred copy of itself behind it.
- Choose a size — Instagram square or portrait, story or status, WhatsApp DP, YouTube — or a ratio at the picture’s own resolution.
- Pick the padding: a blurred copy, a colour, the average colour of the picture’s edge, or transparent.
- Move the picture to the top, bottom or a side if you like, and add an inner margin in pixels or percent.
- Press Fit picture and download. Nothing of the picture has been cut.
Padding that looks intentional
Sometimes the right crop is no crop at all: a group photo where everyone matters, a product shot that must show the whole item, a wide landscape going into a square post. Fitting keeps every pixel of the picture and fills the empty part of the frame instead. A blurred, slightly darkened copy of the picture is the most natural fill for photos — it continues the colours of the scene without competing with it. A plain colour suits product photos and documents; the edge-colour option picks the average colour of the picture’s own border, so a white-background product shot gets a seamless white frame.
Sizes match where the picture is going: 1080 × 1350 for an Instagram portrait post, 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1920 for stories, reels and WhatsApp status, 640 × 640 for a WhatsApp DP and 1280 × 720 for a YouTube thumbnail. Choosing a ratio instead keeps the picture at its own resolution and adds only the padding it needs.
When cropping is better
If the picture has a clear subject and empty space around it, a crop usually looks better than padding. Auto crop places a crop of any ratio on faces or on the detailed area, and crop to square lets you choose by hand. Everything happens in this browser tab — nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Instagram crop my photo?
Instagram keeps feed photos only within a range of shapes — at the time of writing its help describes landscape up to 1.91:1 and portrait up to 4:5 — and crops anything outside it. Fit the photo into 4:5 or 1:1 first and nothing is cut. Check Instagram’s help for the current limits.
How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP?
Choose WhatsApp DP: the whole photo fits into 640 × 640. Keep it centred and add a margin so the circle WhatsApp shows holds all of it.
Will the picture lose quality?
Only when it is scaled. The panel shows the scale — 100 % is pixel for pixel, below that it is reduced to fit, above it is enlarged and may look softer.
Can I get a transparent background?
Yes — choose Transparent and the result is a PNG with see-through padding.
Can I fit a whole folder?
Yes. Batch crop has a “Fit, don’t crop” mode for a whole folder.
