How to auto crop an image
- Open a picture. Auto crop runs straight away at 1:1 and places the box.
- Read the line under the button: it names what placed the crop — faces, the detailed area, or the centre — and whether borders were trimmed first.
- Tap another ratio, such as 4:5 or 16:9. The crop is placed again at once from the measurements already taken.
- Use the Fit slider to keep more or less of the picture, or drag the box yourself. Undo returns to where auto crop put it.
- Press Crop Picture and download.
One button, four steps, one honest sentence
Automatic cropping usually hides its reasoning. Here the pipeline is fixed and short. First, uniform borders — white margins from a scanner, black bars from a video frame, transparent edges on a PNG — are found and set aside, so the crop is made from the real content. Second, if the browser can find faces, the box is placed so every face is whole and the largest one sits on the upper third line, where portraits usually look natural. Third, without faces, the picture’s detail is measured and the box goes where most of it is, with a slight pull towards the centre. Fourth, if there is no clear detail at all, the crop is simply centred.
The sentence under the button only claims what was measured. “Placed on 2 faces” means two faces were detected and both are inside. “Placed on the detailed area” means no faces were used. Nothing is ever described as a subject that was not found.
A starting point, not a decision
The box stays fully editable after auto crop: drag it, resize it, type exact numbers or straighten the picture. Changing the ratio re-runs the placement instantly because the measurements are kept for the picture. For pictures with plain borders and nothing else to decide, trim image is the quicker tool.
Frequently asked questions
How does auto crop decide where the crop goes?
Four steps, in order: trim uniform borders, then place the crop on detected faces, then on the picture’s most detailed area, and finally centre it. The line under the button names the step that decided.
Can auto crop cut through a face?
No. Every detected face must be whole inside the crop. If no box of that ratio can manage it, auto crop says so, leaves the crop alone, and offers a looser fit.
Does it use AI or upload my photo?
Nothing is uploaded. Faces come from the face detection some browsers have built in; the detailed area is measured with plain arithmetic on the pixels in this tab. No model is downloaded.
Why does it say face detection is not available?
Face detection is a browser feature that many browsers do not offer yet. Without it the face step is skipped and the detailed area is used — and the line says so instead of guessing.
Can I auto crop a whole folder?
Yes — batch crop uses the same order for every picture in a folder and reports, row by row, what placed each crop.
