How to crop a profile picture
- Open a photo. The square crop box appears with a dashed circle inside it — that is what round profile displays show.
- Move and resize the box until the face sits well inside the dashed circle.
- Check the previews: 32, 48, 96 and 180 pixels, in a circle and a rounded square, on light and dark backgrounds.
- Tick the platforms you need and press Download for a ZIP with each size — or press Crop Picture for one file.
See it the way other people will
A profile picture is judged at the size of a thumbnail. A crop that looks good full screen can lose the face entirely in a 32-pixel chat list, or have the top of the head cut by a round mask. The previews here are drawn from your actual crop at the sizes apps really use — 32, 48, 96 and 180 pixels — inside a circle and a rounded square, on a light and a dark background, and they update as you move the box.
The dashed circle on the picture marks what a round display keeps. Anything in the corners outside it will be hidden in most apps, so keep the face and the hairline inside it. The file itself stays square, which is what every platform asks you to upload.
Every platform in one download
Tick the platforms you use and the same crop is saved at each one’s recommended size, named by platform, in one ZIP made in your browser. If the crop is smaller than a size, that file is enlarged and the result says so. For a single file at the crop’s own size, press Crop Picture as usual. Platform-specific shapes beyond the avatar — banners, covers and posts — are on crop for YouTube and the other platform pages.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a profile picture be?
The presets use Instagram 320, Facebook 320, LinkedIn 400, X 400, YouTube 800 and WhatsApp 640 pixels square. Platforms change these, so check their help pages if it matters.
Why does the preview show such small sizes?
Because that is how most people see it — in chat lists and comments at 32–48 px. A face that reads at 32 px works everywhere.
Should I upload a circle or a square?
A square. Apps cut the circle themselves; the dashed guide shows what it will hide. For a transparent round PNG, use circle crop.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The crop, the previews and the ZIP are all made in this tab — nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I make two matching profile pictures from one photo?
A matching-pair split is planned. For now, crop the photo twice, once for each half.
